8th Edition, Energy Arbitration and Dispute Resolution in the Middle East and Africa

Dr. Mahmood Hussain delivered the keynote address at the 8th Edition of Energy Arbitration and Dispute Resolution in the Middle East and Africa, organized by International Law Summits. His presentation explored the UAE’s emerging role as a central hub for energy-related dispute resolution in the MENA region.

As mega projects across oil, gas, renewables, and hydrogen reshape the region’s energy landscape, Dr. Hussain addressed the evolving legal challenges and risks accompanying such developments. He underscored the UAE’s strategic advantage—its unique convergence of civil and common law traditions, progressive reforms, and institutions such as DIAC, ADGM, and DIFC Courts—in offering neutrality, enforceability, and legal certainty.

The keynote also examined the importance of managing complex contractual frameworks, enforcing foreign arbitral awards, and applying asset protection tools such as freezing orders. Emphasis was placed on regional collaboration, particularly with the Saudi Center for Commercial Arbitration (SCCA), in enhancing the cross-border dispute resolution ecosystem.

Dr. Hussain concluded by affirming the UAE’s commitment not only to energy development but also to building a resilient legal infrastructure to support and safeguard these transformative investments.
