Our Founding Partner, Dr. Mahmood Hussain, was recently invited to speak at the Russian Arbitration Center at the Russian Institute of Modern Arbitration during the session titled “Arbitration Tapestry: Crossroads for World Cultures.”
The session brought together leading international arbitration practitioners to examine whether a unified global arbitration framework is truly emerging, or whether arbitration remains a patchwork of regional approaches.
In his remarks, Dr. Mahmood addressed the evolving nature of mandatory rules in arbitration — highlighting a shift from purely legislative frameworks toward norms shaped by party autonomy, institutional practices, and anticipated judicial responses. He also tackled common misconceptions about Shari’a and public policy in the Gulf, reaffirming that tahkim (arbitration) is deeply embedded in Islamic legal tradition. He emphasized the UAE’s progressive alignment of public policy with international arbitration standards, positioning the region as an active contributor to the global arbitration landscape.
We extend our thanks to the Russian Arbitration Center and all fellow panelists for an insightful and enriching dialogue. M&CO Legal is proud to contribute to the advancement of global cross-cultural dispute resolution.
