Dr. Mahmood Hussain is the Founding Partner of M&CO Legal, bringing over 20 years of experience across both the public and private sectors. An accomplished disputes lawyer, Dr. Mahmood has successfully resolved significant shareholder and commercial disputes and has acted in more than 30 international arbitration proceedings under the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), Abu Dhabi Commercial Conciliation and Arbitration Center (ADCCAC), and Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC).
Dr. Mahmood played a foundational role in establishing the Dubai International Financial Centre Courts (DIFC Courts) as a member of the committee responsible for their creation and later served as its first Deputy Registrar. He also contributed to the development of key DIFC Court legislations and holds rights of audience before the DIFC Courts.
His expertise has been widely recognized. He was honored by DIAC as one of the region’s most promising arbitrators and is ranked by Chambers and Partners under Dispute Resolution: Domestic. Dr. Mahmood Hussain brings over two decades of high-level experience spanning international arbitration, complex litigation, regulatory reform, and corporate governance advisory. He has acted as counsel and arbitrator in more than 50 international arbitration proceedings under the rules of leading institutions, including the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC), London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), Abu Dhabi Commercial Conciliation and Arbitration Center (ADCCAC), and the Saudi Center for Commercial Arbitration (SCCA). He is frequently appointed as sole arbitrator, co-arbitrator, or chairman of tribunals in high-value, multi-jurisdictional disputes across construction, energy, oil & gas, real estate, telecommunications, banking, franchising, and shareholder matters.
In addition to his arbitral practice, Dr. Mahmood is a seasoned litigator before the UAE Courts, where he has secured favorable judgments in complex commercial disputes and high-stakes shareholder conflicts. His strategic understanding of the interplay between onshore UAE courts, the DIFC Courts, and arbitral tribunals positions him uniquely in cross-border enforcement and jurisdictional matters Dr. Mahmood also played a foundational role in the establishment of the Dubai International Financial Centre Courts (DIFC Courts), serving as a member of the committee responsible for their creation and later as its first Deputy Registrar. His leadership experience includes serving as Legal Director at DLA Piper Middle East and as Vice President – Board Relations, Corporate Governance & Compliance at Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (du), where he oversaw governance frameworks and regulatory compliance at board level.
At the international institutional level, Dr. Mahmood serves as a Member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration and holds leadership roles within ICC-UAE. He also sits on the Advisory Council of the ADGM Dispute Resolution Hearing Centre, further reinforcing his influence in shaping dispute resolution policy and practice in the region.
He is regularly appointed to provide expert legal opinions before courts and tribunals in England & Wales, Singapore, the DIFC, and other international jurisdictions, particularly on UAE law, enforcement of arbitral awards, public policy, corporate governance, and jurisdictional issues.
